Liposuction is a plastic surgery aiming at removing unnecessary fat from any body part and improving silhouette and overall body image.
The plastic surgeon can apply the method at every body part with local fat, which resists health and balanced diet and regular exercise.
Asymmetric body fat distribution often results in local malformations, since more than normal fat accumulates at some parts.
The plastic surgeon’s objective is to address the issue by achieving the best possible aesthetic result. A liposuction surgery is considered successful when the subject is happy with the effects on his/ her body.
Ideal candidates:
Ideal liposuction candidate is any subject who has good health, realistic expectations and is close to normal BMI.
There is no age limit of the “ideal” liposuction candidate. Some subjects are slightly overweight while others, although normal in weight, have local fat accumulation issues or want to improve an asymmetric body area.
Generally, ideal candidate is a healthy adult, with up to 20% deviation from ideal weight, elastic skin and good muscular tone.
Areas of application
Liposuction is the most effective and safe method of treating persistent local fat accumulated in several body parts.
Abdominal liposuction is rather common but it can be applied to several other parts of the body such as:
- Double chin
- Arms
- Back
- Breast
- Adbomen
- Anterior or posterior flanks (waist)
- Thighs
- Buttocks
- Knees & Calf
Operation
Liposuction is performed through very small, almost invisible 3mm incisions. Following local anesthesia, special cannulaes are inserted through the incisions, which by pulsating motions detach the adipose tissue. The detached fat is then pumped out through a special negative pressure device.
Anesthesia
Liposuction involves local anesthesia, which means that the subject is awake during the procedure but feels no pain, while soon after surgery he/ she shall be able to return home. Often general anesthesia is also used so that the subject feels no inconvenience during the operation.
Recovery
After surgery, hospitalization time may vary from a few hours to one day depending on the case. The subject may experience postoperative mild pain, swelling and bruising that recedes with medication and may return to work immediately.
Postoperatively, the subject wears an elastic corset for about 6 weeks for edema reduction, better skin rejuvenation and faster recovery.
For even better recovery, LPG endermologie liposuction can be applied. LPG endermologie helps to improve the subject’s lymphatic function and circulation. It is a totally painless method with no need to abstain from day-to-day activities while the number of sessions required varies from case to case.
Results
ΤThe improved silhouette shall become more evident as the edema and fluid retention, usually occurring after surgery, recedes. Edema usually recedes within a few weeks and continues to improve continuously for 2-3 months, when results are even more evident.
Liposuction results are permanent, as long as the plastic surgeon’s instructions are followed.
Risks
Liposuction is considered to be extremely harmless, painless and safe treatment with no serious medical complications when the subject meets the requirements, preoperative testing and the operation is performed by qualified staff. Of course, as with any medical surgery, liposuction complications cannot be totally excluded.
Some rare and minor complications that may occur are: hematoma, bruising, inflammation, numbness, scars, sensing changes, allergic reactions, parietal abnormalities and deep vein thrombosis.
Cellulite
Liposuction combined with LPG treatment can significantly improving cellulite. LPG Endermologie is a machine, US FDA approved in 1996, for cellulite correction.
On applying LPG, the skin is massaged between two roller heads. This method achieves tissue mobilization, as well as venous and lymphatic system stimulation for elimination of toxins. Fibroblasts are stimulated resulting in increased collagen and elastin production for a revitalized and healthier skin tone.
During each session, an LPG® bodywear covers the entire body to facilitate the movement of the cylinders and acting as a lipo-zoning guide. The sensation is as enjoyable as a relaxing or refreshing massage and each session lasts from 30 to 45 minutes. Subjects are recommended to drink plenty of water and walk during the course of treatments.
Combination with other treatments and operations
Liposuction is often combined with other aesthetic surgeries such as lipotransfer; and the result of such combination is called liposculpture. During liposculpture, liposuction is initially performed and then the removed fat, after applicably treated, is re-injected to body parts that have imperfections or require aesthetic improvement, e.g. facial wrinkles, buttocks, breast augmentation, butt augmentation.
MicroAire PAL – Power Assisted Liposuction
During Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL), the plastic surgeon uses the MicroAire® special PAL machine. It is a sophisticated liposuction method allowing for extreme accuracy.
The special micro-aire handle is pulsating thus allowing the plastic surgeon to guide it with milder movements, offering greater precision and ensuring an even and more effective result in fat extraction of small or big volume.
Among the benefits of this method is also surgery time reduction, thus reducing risk of complications as well and milder postoperative pain.
